“Find joy in the little things and hope in unexpected places.” – Morgan Harper Nichols (See it?)
Ahh, yes…
I had today off, so this morning I decided to take a walk through Laumeier Sculpture Park. It was brisk, beautiful and unexpectedly profound. As I was heading back to my car, I noticed two elderly gentlemen chatting on a bench under a maple tree, bright yellow leaves casually dropping around them in the breeze….
Masterpiece
“The best thing about your life is that it is in a constant state of design. This means you have, at all times, the power to redesign it. Make moves, allow shifts. Smile more, do less. Say no, say yes. Just remember, when it comes to your life, you are not just the artist but…
Hint
“My favorite color is October.” It’s just the beginning, but fall is starting its show…. P.S. That’s a hornet’s nest at the top of the frame in the above photo. Yikes.
Sweetest Day
I learned that Saturday, October 19 was something called “Sweetest Day.” I don’t know much about Sweetest Day, but I do know that October 19 is also my mother’s birthday. So that works out well. Very appropriate. And for my sweetest mother’s birthday, we spent all day Friday celebrating around St. Louis — starting with…
Looking for a sign?
I spotted two…and I’m more than happy to share.
Running with Stanley
I’m almost a week late posting this, but I figure it’s never too late to relive favorite moments. Last weekend I got to run in the Blue Note 5k and watch St. Louis’ love affair with Stanley continue. Play Gloria, this was an amazing experience. So, so special. Stanley was with us at the start……
Not quite
“And all at once, summer collapsed into fall.” — Oscar Wilde What a wonderful sentiment. And, although the calendar says the seasons have changed, we’re not feeling it yet. Both runs this weekend felt every bit like August. Brutal. Bright side? This strange opening act for fall has its own color palette and it’s a…
Either way
In less than a week, I’ve seen two different rainbows under completely different conditions. Friday after work, I went to the camera shop during a downpour. On my way out, the salesman saw sunlight through the front door and he immediately bolted outside with a coworker to look for a rainbow. The conditions were perfect…
Love and love and love
Far too often lately, the state of our world makes me unbearably sad. It doesn’t even matter that my own life is puttering along mostly without incident; everywhere you look, our world and so many people in it are hurting. Cruelty, violence, bigotry, poverty, racism, savage disregard for the dignity of the individual…the grief becomes…
Today
“Today be good to people. listen – without rushing, give the benefit of the doubt, smile – just because, slow down – just a bit, choose kindness first, and tell those you love that you love them.” — Rachel Marie Martin, author And if I might take the liberty to add to this lovely sentiment……
Life Lately According to the iPhone
Another running route in the park brought new views… …and some old ones. And an unexpected sight. A closer look: one of these things is not like the other. One of these things…absolutely belongs. This goose stood watch over his napping duck friends and it was adorable. No one thought anything of it. It’s amazing…
Saturday Scenes
This is fast becoming one of my favorite running routes. Such a great view. Every time I run around the lake, I laugh at this bridge. It looks so bummed out.
Ahhhhh…
“If you get tired, learn to rest, not to quit.” And this Labor Day, I’m awfully thankful for time to rest. No working. No running. No serious chores. Just a walk with friends, time looking at neighborhood flowers, lots of tennis on the television, and just…quiet. Gracious, I needed that.
Choose
“Choose joy. Don’t wait for things to get easier, simpler, better. Life will always be complicated. Learn to be happy right now. Otherwise you’ll run out of time. We can’t often choose our circumstances but we can better control our reactions and emotions. Choose joy.” – unknown Photos from this morning’s crack-of-dawn long run. And…
Sunshine
Oreo cookies, candy melts and chocolate sprinkles = the easiest cookie pops ever. Sometimes you just have to make your own sunshine.
More
More sunshine. More lemons. More sunsets. More bananas. More sunflowers. More yellow. More happiness.
Transition
From sunsets… to sunrises… and everything in between… I’m noticing a definite shift in nature’s color palette lately. Fall is most certainly headin’ this way.
Take a moment
You’re so hard on yourself. But remember, everyone has a chapter they don’t read out loud. Take a moment. Sit back. Marvel at your life, at the mistakes that gave you wisdom, at the suffering that gave you strength. Despite everything, you still move forward; be proud of this. Continue to endure. Continue to persevere….
Turn the page
This weekend I began the process of purging my house of all the things I don’t need — starting with stuff in my room. I started with my closets, dumping the contents of each old purse and bag. One by one, ticket stubs and other mementos started dropping out, until a pile of memories sat…
Bigger
“Be humble. The world is bigger than your view of the world. And certainly, God is much bigger than your view of God.” – Eugene Cho
Proof
Sunsets are proof that no matter what happens, every day can end beautifully. This was last night’s sunset. I can only vaguely remember what happened yesterday or what kind of day it was, but I can clearly remember how perfectly it ended. So I’m calling it a very good day.
