For almost a week now, I’ve watched a pair of downy woodpeckers perform a little feeding ritual. Every day, the little male takes pieces from the suet feeder and feeds it to the female. It happens so regularly that I have even been able to take photos.
Also for quite some time, I’ve watched a pair of cardinals frequent my feeders, though I’ve never been able to photograph them together. Then this afternoon, I witnessed the same feeding ritual with this pair as I’ve seen with the woodpeckers. It was the sweetest thing. The bad news is that I couldn’t get a photo of him feeding her. The good news is that I got their photo together (finally). While working from home has been adjustment, getting to learn about and watch my feathered neighbors has been such a joy.
Pretty little girl.
from what i have read about the male feeding the female, the male is out “hunting” for food while the female is at the nest protecting the nest and if there are any chicks, then she feeds them what was given to her by the male.
