Holiday Lights Run

An unexpected addition to our calendars actually made it possible for me to cross an item off my winter “Travel in Place” list. Tonight we ran in a local running store’s “Holiday Lights Run” in the south part of the city, including…Candy Cane Lane!

Before we even got to the famous street, we made our way through some other lovely neighborhoods. This house was on (self-proclaimed) Angel Street. It’s my favorite and now I want to move.

I love our little West County home town, but I’ve never wandered this deep into the south part of the city. No two bungalows are alike and it gives the warmest vibe. Especially with the holiday festivities lighting up entire neighborhoods along the way.

Especially Candy Cane Lane.

There is NO WAY to do this justice. Every house in the entire neighborhood was a riotous display of colors and characters. It was amazing to see it on foot! (I know we were supposed to be running, but we had a lot of walking going on during this part of the course.) A lovely couple even stood on a corner with a bon fire and handed out candy canes to the backlog of cars slowly making their way through the display — and us runners. Everywhere you looked, jaws were dropped.

By the way, Drew is very proud of his ugly Christmas sweater.

Check out this ginormous sand sculpture!

On the way home, we stopped for pizza at the most appropriate place for the world’s most dedicated U2 fan.

What an amazing night. No bibs, no time chips, no finisher’s medals…only the best run I have ever had. (Even our entry fee was a free-will donation of toys for the children served by Santa’s Helpers.) I misinterpreted the course map, so I got us lost by more than half a mile. None of us cared. It was magic. And we knew were making memories we’d be holding onto for a long time.
