What a thing

“If every single person who has liked you in your lifetime were to light up on a map, it would create the most glitteringly beautiful network you could imagine. Throw in the strangers you have been kind to, the people you’ve made laugh, or inspired along the way, and that star-bright web of you would be an impressive sight to behold. You’re so much more than you think you are. You have done so much more than you realize. You’re trailing a bright pathway that you don’t even know about. What a thing. What a thing indeed.” – Donna Ashworth

Almost every morning on my days in the office, I see this woman pushing her dog in a stroller in a specific spot along my commute. It makes me smile every time.

When I spotted her again this morning, I thought about the fact that she has no idea how much I enjoy seeing them — that they are part of my routine.

It reminded me of this elderly couple in my old neighborhood that my kids and I adored. These two walked all over the place, always hand in hand. We even texted each other when we spotted the pair, happy to know they were well and still together. Again, they had no idea how much we enjoyed them.

How hopeful is it to think we could possibly make a difference in the world just by being in it and simply going about our business? What a thing indeed.
