Two days, two trips to Michael’s and one trip to the hardware store (and countless replays of Elf) later, our tree is up and the house is fully decorated — inside and out. The biggest source of time suckage? Unpacking our ornaments. Every year I can’t figure out how we could possibly fit more ornaments on our tree, yet every year we manage to pull it off — and even add some new ones. Gee, based on this picture, can you guess which is one of my faves?

During my second trip to Michael’s this evening, I dropped a box containing six glass ornaments — and broke all of them. A nearby worker came over, scooped it all up and gave me a big smile. “Don’t worry about it,” she said. “Happens all the time.” And when I insisted that I pay for them, she waved me off and wouldn’t let me. Let me get this straight. After a full day of working retail during one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year – and undoubtedly dealing with individuals with holiday cheer deficiencies, this woman’s priority was making me feel better? Wow. How cool is that? I want to work to be more like her.

The little white cat in the left hand corner of the tree is so cute!
