One of the things I love about our office is that they use an abundance of wildflowers in the landscaping. Purple coneflowers, black-eyed susans, purple mallows and other sorts of lovelies. But it’s about more than just flowers. It’s about the attention to detail and the conscious effort to respectfully nod to the earth and the environment. It’s the Franciscan effect. Maybe that’s why two more robins have built nests in our parking garage. Maybe the bird word has gotten around that we’re earth-friendly.
But there are thoughts about the environment lately that I’ve made every effort to avoid — and they involve the oil spill. The suffering…the destruction…it’s so painful. Guess you could say that I’ve been in denial. Then today I read a blog post by one of my favorite photographer/bloggers. She got her kids involved with a Craft Hope for the Earth project. She documented her project from beginning to end with the most precious photographs. For whatever reason, it made me tear up. And I’m not sure why. Maybe it was partly because I was so moved by what a wonderful thing this mother did with her kids — wow, what a great mom. But I think another part might have been grief. I hate what’s happening to our earth and our creatures. I think I’m going to try to pull my head out of the sand, make myself think about what’s happening, and see what I can come up with for the project.
