The past few days have been spent in Springfield, host to the state high school tennis championships*. And for the second year in a row, Tanner’s birthday has fallen during the tournament, so we’ve put off celebrating until he’s off the court (cake for breakfast tomorrow! Yay!). But none of that changes the fact that my youngest child is now 16 years old.
Snapshot from a much earlier time. I love this photo for so many reasons, not the least of these being my boy’s big, blonde curls. More than that, this is essence of Tanner — curious, impish, lover of all critters, and willing to meet you wherever you are if he cares about you. He’s considerably more complex now and these traits have grown even stronger. (Case in point: he is opposed to animal cruelty of any kind. Tonight I had to scoop up a live grasshopper and release it outside because Tanner doesn’t believe in killing bugs.) He’s very careful about the folks that he allows in his innermost circles, but once they’re in, they find a kind, compassionate, scary-smart, laid back, loyal friend with a wicked sense of humor, insatiable appetite for knowledge, strong political views and an eclectic taste in music. Simply put: what a great kid. Much love to my baby boy on one of the biggest of birthdays.
*Congratulations to both Drew and Tanner on a fantastic season and state tournament. The team finished fourth in the state overall, while Drew finished in the top eight in singles and Tanner and his doubles partner reached the quarterfinals. I’m so proud.
