Heroes and other such stuff

I’d forgotten all about this little treasure. It’s always so fun to sift through past photo files because each photo comes with a story. Could be a little story based on a hike or even a baking adventure. But some stories are big. Like this one. This silly guy was a piece of street graffiti that Tanner and I spotted as we were walking downtown on my birthday. We were walking to the parking garage…just after meeting Trevor Hall. Best birthday present ever. I’m so glad I stumbled onto this photo today so I could reflect on the experience for a few minutes. Not everyone gets to introduce their kid to his hero. I’m still so grateful.
While on the subject of heroes, I’ve become a reluctant Tim Tebow convert this season. It took me a lot longer than my kids to come around, but what a good guy. None of us can relate to his style of evangelism (admittedly, it used to totally irritate me), but he’s still managed to win our household over. His style and expression of faith isn’t ours, but he seems like he’s genuinely trying to do some good in the world and be a blessing to others. I like that. And let’s face it. Kids look up to these athletes — and there’s a severe shortage of athletes deserving of the hero status. So until he proves otherwise, Tebow’s a good egg in my book. (Love him or loathe him, I’ve found a couple of good articles this week that provide some perspective. Click here and here.)
Trevor and Tebow. Gracious, that seems like an unlikely pair of heroes. An eclectic, dreadlocked hippie singer and a squeaky clean cut all-American jock. But there’s a clear common denominator: we admire them for their work, but we adore them for the way they go about it.
