Oklahoma!

Road trip with the boys took us to Oklahoma City… home of the Oklahoma City Thunder! We don’t have a professional basketball team where we live, so we’d never seen a game before. So we took to the road. Oklahoma City was the ideal choice because Drew’s idol is Kevin Durant.
But we saw lots of other cool stuff, too. On the way there, we stopped in southern Missouri at the George Washington Carver monument. It was a total whim, totally cool — and out in the middle of nowhere. Diamond, Missouri, which is Carver’s birthplace.
While in Oklahoma City, we took in the Bricktown Entertainment District for lunch. We wandered around the canal, checked out the sites and (I) enjoyed flowers starting to bloom.

Downtown Oklahoma City has undergone an amazing renaissance. It used to be run down and on the seedy side. It’s remarkable to see what it’s become.
And then our adventure took a rather sobering turn. The Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum, the site of the Oklahoma City bombing. We didn’t take in the museum, rather we just walked the grounds. What a profoundly moving space.
Reflecting pool, the Survivor’s Tree, 168 chairs representing each victim, the fence weighed down with remembrances and offerings… it was tough.
After the memorial, we headed to the art museum and the Arts District, where we saw a super cool building and some more development.
And then it was THUNDER TIME!!
I still got my birthday wish — Drew and Kevin Durant in a photo! Ha!
Our seats were ridiculous. Oh. My. Gracious.
My favorite player from the night wasn’t a Thunder. He was a Sun. Steve Nash. His energy and enthusiasm was more than evident. LOVED him.
After the game, the kids got to meet the mascot and hit half court.
An OT game and the Thunder came out on top. It was a thrill from beginning to end. The boys had such a blast. Okay, let’s face it. I did, too.
Now we’re home, happy and exhausted. What a great weekend adventure. Whew, I needed that.
