Hello, Po!

Zoo Atlanta had their 100-Day Panda Naming Ceremony today with considerably more fanfare than usual. Jack Black revealed the baby’s name as a cross-promotion for the next Kung Fu Panda movie that is coming out in a few months. So guess what, the baby’s name is Po. At first, I was appalled that the zoo would commercialize such a sacred tradition. Cross-promote Jack Black? Are you frigging kidding me? Dude, have you seen Tropic Thunder? But then I read the details. Turns out that Dreamworks is going to provide support to not only the panda conservation efforts at the zoo, but they’re also supporting the efforts at Chengdu Research Base of panda breeding in China. Wow. WOW. How cool is that.
Well, didn’t I learn a few lessons. 1.) Don’t jump to conclusions before you read the fine print (or any print!) and 2.) commercialism can actually work for good. Who knew.
Oh. And 3.) I so want one of those cuddly panda hoodies.
