Had an interesting experience last week. I took Tanner and his friend to see Trevor Hall in concert*. At first, the most interesting part of the concert was the venue and the crowd. It was at this little club downtown and there were no seats. Instead, we were corralled around this stage like a herd of sweaty cows. Okay, not cows. But we were corralled in with a bunch of early twenty-somethings. I was clearly the oldest reveler in the place and I felt a little… awkward. But I got over myself and had a great time. I find this guy so fascinating. I think he’s like 23 years old, but he’s one of the oldest souls I’ve ever seen. He’s soft-spoken and kind, joyful and spiritually wise beyond his years. There’s such a lovely, peaceful light about him. I was so intrigued that I did a little reading up on him after the concert. I read this article and I’ve been thinking about it ever since. What an interesting guy. I guess I’ve always figured that spiritual people are just naturally wired that way. Or just lucky. But this interview with Hall made me realize that spirituality requires discipline, effort and focus. People like this guy don’t have that glow simply because they’re good. They feed the glow. Constantly. It’s their life’s work. Not sure what to do with the lesson learned from this 23-year old reggae songwriter or my 16-year old who introduced me to his music, but I’m grateful for it.
