Well, I learned a couple of things this evening. For starters, I learned what Powder Valley looks like through the lens of an iPhone app. And it’s really cool. But you know what else I learned? I learned that fall is coming and the sun is going down earlier. Much earlier. Though it might seem like I could be easily distracted when I wander around the woods, I am usually very careful and mindful of my surroundings. But tonight, I was so enamored with this new perspective of this wonderful place that I didn’t pay attention to anything else. All of the sudden, when I was about three-fourths of a mile into the woods, I stopped and looked around. It dawned on me that I hadn’t seen another walker for quite some time. My phone was giving me a low battery warning and I realized that it was getting dark. Daylight was dimming fast and the canopy of the trees overhead was expediting the process. And oh crap, the gate closes at 8:00. How am I going to haul three-quarters of a mile before the sun goes down AND the gate closes…in flip flops? And if it gets dark before I get out of these woods, how am I going to call anyone – my phone is almost dead. Lemme tell ya, I hauled my rear out of there so fast that I made it to the car with about ten minutes to spare. I’ll admit that this was one of the few times that I’ve felt real fear while being by myself in the woods. And I didn’t like it one bit. Now I’m home and happy to see the photos. But next time, I’m keeping to the short path.
