When my brother was a kid, he was the first of us to foray into the realm of competitive junior tennis. A little guy, John showed up to his first tournament in the same gear in which he practiced — denim cut-offs, a sleeveless shirt and black sneakers. Needless to say, he didn’t blend with the white dress code of the country club set. However, he ultimately stood out for another reason at that tournament: he beat everyone. Unfazed by the other kids’ threads, he won the tournament. Mom and dad went out and bought him more “typical” tennis attire, but his game always stood out. It’s really a credit to his character. He’s hard-working, determined, fearless. It’s just the way he is. Even now, with lots of hard work and training, he’s qualified for the Boston Marathon. Beyond his work ethic, he’s an extraordinary father, a much-loved uncle and an all around great guy. And today he’s year older. Lots of love and birthday wishes to my big brother.
