“You know when I said I knew little about love?
That wasn’t true.
I know a lot about love.
I’ve seen it, centuries and centuries of it, and it was the only thing that made watching your world bearable. All those wars. Pain, lies, hate… It made me want to turn away and never look down again. But when I see the way that mankind loves… You could search to the furthest reaches of the universe and never find anything more beautiful.” — Yvaine, Stardust (2007)
I took the top photo earlier this week. This pair of older women…I gathered they were best friends. I watched them as they strolled leisurely through the parking lot, just having finished their lunch. They exuded so much love and joy that I stopped in my tracks. They warmed my heart even from a distance — a feeling that immediately brought to mind that Stardust quote.
For all of the ugliness, cruelty, and crap that we witness around us and in the news, these are the moments that make it all worth while. Moments of friendship, kindness and love. Moments that really explain why we’re here: for each other. Whether it’s best friends, young couples*, parents and children, or couples who have been together for a lifetime, when we share love with each other, it is such a beautiful thing. Even people in the vicinity can be touched and blessed by it.
*The young couple with the hula hoop is still hands down my favorite (and luckiest) photo I’ve ever taken.
